Something of a reboot, from The Exorcist, the 1973 film from Warner Bros. We have yet to fully appraise the story, but there are striking similarities at the outset. Save for the locations. Taking a leaf out of Angels and Demons, perhaps, in moving the possession to Rome. Great artwork.

Father Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe) has a highly specific and unsettling job - he’s the Chief Exorcist of the Vatican. If you’re the chief demon slayer for the Vatican, you’re more than likely going to be a busy man, and that turns out to be the case for Father Amorth.

In the first trailer for The Pope’s Exorcist, Crowe inhabits Father Amorth as he takes on the case of a young boy’s horrifying possession, and his investigation leads to a secret the Vatican has been trying to keep for centuries, as the story goes. What gives the film some added demonic muscle, is that it’s inspired on the true story of Father Amorth, based on his own stories, about performing more than 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican.

The film comes from director Julius Avery (Overlord), from an original script from Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos, and is based on the books “An Exorcist Tells His Story” and “An Exorcist: More Stories” by Father Amorth himself.

Inspired by the actual files of Father Gabriele Amorth, Chief Exorcist of the Vatican (Academy Award winner Russell Crowe), The Pope’s Exorcist follows Amorth as he investigates a young boy’s terrifying possession and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy that the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden.

In real life, Amorth, who died in 2016 at age 91, claimed to have performed over 70,000 exorcisms over a three-decade period, according to the National Catholic Register.

On Wednesday, Sony Pictures Entertainment released the trailer for The Pope's Exorcist, which stars Crowe, 58, as real-life Catholic priest Gabriele Amorth, an official exorcist of the Catholic church who sets out on the Pope's orders to conduct an exorcist and winds up discovering a vast conspiracy involving the Vatican itself.

The trailer showcases Amorth as he sits before a church council in Rome's Vatican City and explains that the vast majority of "exorcisms" he performs largely involve him referring the person involved to "doctors and psychiatrists," before the Pope (Franco Nero) asks him to investigate a situation in which a young boy appears to have been possessed by a demon.

As Amorth conducts his investigation, he discovers a centuries-old conspiracy involving a past experience the Catholic church has had with the same demon.

Joining Crowe in this supernatural story of possession, is a performer with one of the all-time great voices in cinema, Ralph Ineson (The Witch, The Green Knight) who will be voicing the demon.

Crowe and Ineson are joined by Franco Nero (Django, John Wick: Chapter 2), Laurel Marsden (Ms. Marvel), Cornell S. John (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald), Alex Essoe (Doctor Sleep), Daniel Zovotta (It Follows), and Peter DeSouza-Feighoney. It should hit the spot for those into religious films, with the backing of Sony Pictures.
